How to Fix HMS 0300-0200-0001-0002: Nozzle Temperature Runaway Error
Bambu Lab HMS error code 0300-0200-0001-0002 is a thermal runaway protection event for the hotend. The printer detected that the nozzle temperature deviated from its target in an uncontrolled way — either dropping sharply during a print or rising beyond the commanded setpoint — and halted as a safety precaution.
What the Error Means
Thermal runaway protection is a critical firmware safety feature. Within the 0300-0200 nozzle thermal subgroup, suffix 0001-0002 indicates the temperature reading deviated outside the acceptable band and did not recover. Common causes include a partially failed heater cartridge, a loose thermistor that is not correctly measuring the block temperature, a draft or part cooling fan blowing directly on the heater block, or a heater block that has lost its thermal sock.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Power off the printer and let the hotend cool fully before inspecting any components.
- Check the silicone thermal sock on the heater block. If it is missing, torn, or displaced, hot air from cooling fans can cause the block to lose heat faster than the heater can compensate, triggering runaway detection. Replace or reseat the sock.
- Inspect the thermistor seating in the heater block. The thermistor tip must be fully inserted into its hole and secured with a grub screw or retaining clip. A loose thermistor reads air temperature rather than block temperature, causing false runaway events.
- Check the heater cartridge connection at the toolhead PCB. Reseat the connector. A failing heater cartridge with intermittent resistance will cause temperature drops that look like runaway events.
- Inspect the heater cartridge with a multimeter: measure resistance across its pins. A healthy 24 V / 40 W cartridge reads approximately 14–15 Ω. A very high or open reading means the cartridge is failing.
- Replace the heater cartridge if resistance is out of spec, and replace the thermistor if it was not fully seated.
- Reassemble, power on, and run a controlled preheat to 220 °C while watching the temperature graph for stability.
Parts Required
- Heater cartridge (24 V, 40 W — verify wattage for your printer model)
- Silicone heater block sock (specific to your hotend size)
- Hotend thermistor if reseating did not resolve the fault
- Hex and Torx drivers for toolhead access
Persistent thermal runaway errors after hardware checks warrant a contact with Bambu Lab support, as firmware or mainboard PID control issues can also be a factor.
